Year 4 and Year 5 pathways

Build the skill.
Then the score.

A connected small-group pathway for pupils in and around Cheam. We teach the foundations first, add exam technique at the right moment and use each assessment to decide what comes next.

01Year 4Foundations

Build the vocabulary, number fluency and reasoning habits that later exam work depends on.

02Year 5SET Accelerator

Turn secure knowledge into accurate, efficient performance across English and maths.

03Year 5-6Exam Sprints

Start at the right level

Two programmes.
One clear journey.

Children do not need full mock papers before their core skills are ready. Each stage has a distinct job, with movement driven by confidence and evidence rather than the calendar alone.

01 / YEAR 4FoundationsSECURE THE BUILDING BLOCKS

For pupils who need strong academic habits and a richer base before selective preparation becomes more timed and exam-specific.

  • Reading depth, inference and ambitious vocabulary
  • Arithmetic fluency and confident problem solving
  • Clear written methods and careful checking habits
  • A calm introduction to selective-style questions

02 / YEAR 5SET AcceleratorCONVERT KNOWLEDGE INTO PERFORMANCE

For pupils ready to combine curriculum depth with selective question styles, purposeful timing and increasingly independent paper strategy.

  • SET English and maths question families
  • Section timing, answer-sheet accuracy and pacing

The BrightSET teaching loop

Progress should be visible.

Each learning cycle ends with a specific next action. Families know what is improving, pupils know what to practise and tutors know what to revisit.

01

Teach

Model the idea clearly and name the method a pupil can reuse.

02

Practise

Move from supported examples to independent questions.

03

Diagnose

Separate knowledge gaps from timing, method and misreading.

04

Revisit

Return to priorities until the better approach becomes automatic.

When skills meet exam conditions

Ready for the next paper?

Year 5 pupils can add weekly Exam Sprints when full-paper timing and composure become the priority. Recent sprint evidence can also identify where an individual focus session would help.
